The first Europeans to settle in Bannon came around the mid-1800s. At that time, the town was a small farming community consisting of only a few families. Over time, the town grew to accommodate more settlers and they eventually established a post office, a general store, and several churches. Unfortunately, the town experienced a setback during the 1940s when coal companies forced many of the families to move elsewhere due to their lack of coal mining rights.
